What is Freeware Software

Just a little bit about what freeware software means because with the many different types of free / free-ish software around, it does get a little confusing. Rather that being specific to GratSoft's freeware, this is more of an article on freeware in general.

Freeware is software offered free of charge and usually downloadable off of the Internet. Freeware is not public domain, open source, shareware or adware. Freeware is proprietary software that is available for use at no monetary or other cost. Although it is available for free, the author retains the copyright, which means that you cannot do anything with it that is not expressly allowed by the author within the user license agreement.

You should look a freeware's license to ensure that it is suitable for you. Each license is specific to the freeware software and may vary significantly between different freeware softwares. However, there are many common themes in freeware licenses. For example, most freeware forbids the user to alter the program, repackage it, or sell it. Also most freeware allows you to redistrubute the software for free.

Understandably, freeware does not come with official technical support and some programs do not even have a help menu. Thus web sites, blogs and forums are the primary resources for information and help with most freewares.
